International Biology Olympiad – Hong Kong Contest

We are delighted to share that our Biology students Paolo Mendoza SILVA (6H) and Aryan Mandar PENDSE (6H) obtained highly encouraging results in the International Biology Olympiad – Hong Kong Contest (IBO-HKC) held in November 2020. They brought home the Bronze Award and the Honourable Mention Award, respectively.

In addition, they were invited to the Prize-giving Ceremony organized by the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) via Zoom, and they have been selected to participate in a series of enhancement programmes over the year starting from January 2021, organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education for International Biology Olympiad 2021. Paolo Mendoza SILVA (6H) was also recently selected to join Phase II IBO trainings by various Universities Professors starting from March 2021.

The International Biology Olympiad – Hong Kong Contest is a territory-wide competition for secondary school students co-organized by the EDB and the HKAGE. Although affected by the COVID-19 situation this year, there were still over 1000 top students from more than 100 Hong Kong secondary schools participating in this contest via online platform under Zoom invigilation.

The competition aims at promoting Biology Education in Hong Kong and providing challenging enrichment learning opportunities for students with high potential in Biology. A series of enrichment programmes arranged by the HKAGE will be provided for the better-performing students in the IBO-HKC 2020. Students with outstanding performance in the enrichment programme will have a chance to be selected to represent Hong Kong to take part in the 32nd International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in July 2021. The purpose of the IBO is to enable students to apply analytical skills and creativity through tackling challenging problems in Biology and conducting experiments. Each participating region may send a team of four students for the competition.
